On 23rd September 2018, India successfully test-fired it’s indigenously developed ballistic missile defense system off the coast of Odisha. India, with the success of the test, achieved a notable breakthrough in designing country’s first Ballistic Missile Defense system with two layers.
Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV), was the name of the mission, intended to engage the targets at an altitude above 50 km of the earth’s atmosphere, which is known as exo-atmosphere. The test was conducted from Wheeler Island of the Integrated Test Range (ITR),now known as Abdul Kalam Island.
Prithvi Defence Vehicle: Mission Highlights
- PDV mission involved mock-up for intercepting an incoming ballistic missile off the Bay of Bengal with the firing of interceptor missile of the coast of Odisha.
- Both the target missile and the PDV interceptor were accurately engaged, leading to the success of the test.
- Enemy’s ballistic missile precisely tracked by the radar-based detection and tracking system, all though an automated operation.
- The incoming missile’s trajectory was correctly predicted by the computer system assisted by the data received from the radar. The PDV took off from as quickly as it got the command for lift of from the nested computers.
- Supported by a Redundant Micro Navigation System and high-accuracy Inertial Navigation System (INS) for guidance, the interceptor swiftly moved towards the point of target.
- The heat shield of the missile ejected and the IR seeker hollow opened as the missile crossed the atmosphere, to look at the target location transmitted by the nested mission computer.
- The interceptor missile moved from an interception with the help of IR Seeker and Inertial Guidance system.
- All the actions were monitored by the Telemetry/Range Stations in real-time at various stations.
