During the 13th Conference of Central Council of Health and Family Welfare, the Union Ministry for Health and Family Welfare under Dr. Harsh Vardhan, launched the Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan, SUMAN Initiative.
The primary focus of the initiative is to provide dignified, respectful and quality health care free of cost for every women and newborn infant coming to the health care services with an aim to bring an end to all the preventable maternal and newborn deaths. Apart from maintaining a zero tolerance for the denial of any kind of services, the initiative also intends to provide a positive birth experience to both the mother and its baby.
Under the programme, the pregnant women are entitled to atleast four ante natal checkups that will also include one checkup during the first trimester and one under Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan, Iron Folic acid supplementation and other components of comprehensive Antenatal Care Services Package (ANC). This also includes six home-based newborn care visits. The Government will also be providing free transport back and forth from home to health institutions.
According to Government Reports, India’s Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) has come down to 130 per 1, 00,000 live births and the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has come down to 34 per 1000 live births. With proper implementation of the SUMAN Initiative the government aims to bring these figures down to a minimum and afford its citizens a safe, effective, timely and efficient health care services.
