Surgical Strike 2.0 : IAF jets destroy Jaish terror camps across LoC

In vengeance to the dreaded Pulwama terror attack, the Indian Air Force attacked Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camps in Pakistan occupied Kashmir. The IAF Jets crossed the line of control in the early hours of February 26, 2019. 

Indian Foreign Secretary, Vijay Gokhale, confirmed the same during a press conference in New Delhi today. The Foreign Secretary stated that India has bombed the biggest training camp of Jaish- e-Mohammad  in Balakot.

  • Indian Airforce reportedly used Mirage-2000 jets to drop 1000 kg of laser-guided bombs, which caused an estimated 200-300 casualty.
  • Groups of jihadis, JeM terrorists, trainers and senior commanders were reportedly eliminated.
  • The terrorist camp was headed by Maulana Yousuf Azhar (also known as Ustad Ghouri).

Afghanistan begins export to India through Chabahar port

Afghanistan began exports to India through the Chabahar port in Iran on February 24, 2019. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani flagged the first consignment of exports to India. This is for the first time Afghanistan is exporting goods to India sidestepping the Pakistan route.

The President said that the Chabahar port is the outcome of strong collaboration between India, Iran and Afghanistan, which will bring economic prosperity to all the country involved.

  • Reportedly, 570 tonnes of dried fruits, carpets, textiles and mineral products were shipped using 23 trucks from the western Afghan city of Zaranj to Chabahar in Iran.
  • The consignment will reach Mumbai port from the Chabahar.
  • With continued effort and opening of new trade route, Afghanistan’s exports are expected to increase from $1 billion to $2 billion.

PM Modi dedicates National War Memorial to the nation

On February 25, 2019, PM Narendra Modi dedicated the National War Memorial to the nation in an earnest ceremonial function in New Delhi.Located near  the India Gate in New Delhi, the National War Memorial is an appropriate tribute to the martyrs who lost their lives defending the mother nation. 

The arrangement of the National War Memorial includes four concentric circles, namely:

  • Amar Chakra or Circle of Immortality
  • Veerta Chakra or Circle of Bravery
  • Tyag Chakra or Circle of Sacrifice
  • Rakshak Chakra or Circle of Protection

 

President Ram Nath Kovind confers Gandhi Peace Prize for 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018

President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Gandhi Peace Prize for the years 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 on February 26, 2019 at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. PM Modi was one of the important attendees.

The awards were announced by the Union Ministry of Culture on January 16, 2019.

About the Gandhi Peace Prize

  • The Gandhi Peace Prize was introduced on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1995.
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 crore
  • A team of Jury under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister selects the award.
