President Ram Nath Kovind confers Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2019

The President of India,  Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2019 on January 22, 2019 to  26 shortlisted awardees including one joint award for National Child Award (now renamed as Bal Shakti Puraskar) under the category of innovation, scholastic, sports, art and culture, social service and bravery.2 individuals and 3 institutions were awarded under National Child Welfare Awards category (now renamed as BalKalyan Puraskar).

National Women’s Party launched in Mumbai

With the motto of women empowerment, the National Women’s Party (NWP) has been formed and was launched on January 21, 2019 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Dr Swetha Shetty, the founder of the party, is a medical practitioner-cum-activist from Hyderabad, who will serve as the party’s president. Shetty, announcing its founding said, along with women empowerment, she will prioritize 50 per cent reservation for women in the parliament and in state assembly and work for the betterment of country’s farmers and soldiers.

Child born out of marriage between Muslim man & Hindu woman entitled to father’s property: SC

Child born out of a marital relation between a Muslim man and his Hindu wife is allowed to claim a share in his father’s property, said the Supreme Court on January 22, 2019. The bench comprising Justice NV Ramana and Justice Mohan M. Shantana Goudar witnessed that the marriage of a Muslim man with Hindu woman or idolateris neither a valid nor avoid  marriage, but is just an irregular  marriage.

Article 35-A: Supreme Court to take ‘in-chamber’ decision on plea challenging the legislation

The Supreme Court said on January 22, 2019 that it would take an ‘in-chamber’ decision on listing of a petition challenging the constitutional validity of Article 35-A, that extends special rights and privileges to permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir.Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said advocate Bimal Roy who required an early hearing in the matter, that the files of the case were in his chamber and a date would be given soon. Article 35A gives distinctive rights to the permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir and prohibits people from outside the state from owning immovable property there, or settling enduringly or availing themselves of any state-sponsored scholarship schemes.

Indian Navy commences largest-ever coastal defence exercise – ‘Sea Vigil’

The Indian Navy commenced its largest-ever coastal defence exercise on January 22, 2019 –named as ‘Sea Vigil’-off the Indian coast, ten years after the “26/11” attack.
This first of its kind exercise, is being commenced along the entire 7516.6 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India and is linking all the 13 coastal States and Union Territories along with all maritime stakeholders, including the fishing and coastal communities.
