Indian Administration Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS), undoubtedly the most prestigious and exciting jobs in our country and the jobs provide you with position and authority, with which you become accountable for many things in the society.

Indian Administration Service is a position that isn’t given to just anyone, it is offered to only those candidates who deserve the most. Tons of responsibility comes with it too, such as administration of a department or district or a particular area of govt. functionality. IAS officer are responsible for their respective department and need to give suggestions for the development of same. However, IPS officer are recruited to maintain law and order in the society.

The Essential Differences

The job of an IAS officer is to assist in public administration, formulation of policy and strategy execution. Whereas, the job of an IPS officer is to maintain law and order the area they are posted, where they have to investigate crime and administrate police work.

Most candidates appearing for the civil services exam always prefer to become as IAS officer. However, candidates who top the exam are only selected or appointed as IAS. Most candidates consider IPS as second best alternative.

Candidates who clear the mains exam are selected for Interview, which is last part of civil services exam. Those who get through the interview score high in overall examination are selected BY UPSC, where after they are sent for a training session at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. Selected candidates for IPS are trained at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad, Telangana.

Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pension are the controlling authorities of the IAS cadre. The IPS cadre controlling authority is Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

It is apparent that the pay grade of an IAS officer is much higher than that of an IAS officer. IPS officer are posted in an area as per the requirement, whereas there’s only one IAS officer posted for a particular area.

To sum it up, the responsibility, salary, post, authority of an IAS officer is much higher than IPS officer
